This is one of the most common questions we get at the water equipment counter, and the honest answer is: it depends on what you're growing, not on which system is "better." Drip and sprinkler irrigation solve different problems. Here's how to tell which one solves yours.
How Each System Actually Works
Sprinklers (from KSH 150 for a basic unit, up to KSH 17,000+ for a rain gun) throw water over an area the way rainfall does, good coverage, simple setup, familiar to most farmers. Drip irrigation kits (from KSH 1,000) deliver water slowly, directly to the base of each plant through a network of pipes and emitters.
Water Efficiency: Drip Wins, Clearly
Drip irrigation typically uses 30–50% less water than sprinklers for the same growing area, because almost none of it is lost to evaporation, wind drift, or wetting the spaces between plants where nothing is growing. If you're irrigating from a borehole, a limited water source, or paying for pumped water, this difference compounds fast over a season.
Which Crops Suit Which System
- Choose drip for: tomatoes, capsicum, onions, and other row crops planted in defined lines, especially in greenhouses, where drip is close to the industry standard.
- Choose sprinklers for: pasture, maize, and other crops planted densely across a wide area where per-plant precision isn't practical or necessary.
- Either works for: most vegetable plots, the deciding factor here is usually budget and water availability rather than the crop itself.
Setup Cost: Sprinklers Are Cheaper to Start
A basic sprinkler setup can be running for a few thousand shillings. A proper drip system, irrigation kit, PVC lay-flat hose (KSH 15,000), and fittings, costs more upfront but often pays that difference back within one or two seasons through water savings and, frequently, higher yields from more consistent watering.
Maintenance Reality Check
Sprinklers are close to "set and forget." Drip lines need periodic checking for blocked emitters, especially if your water source carries sediment, a simple inline filter solves most of this, and we stock spare kits from KSH 500 for exactly this kind of upkeep.

- Growing row vegetables on a limited water budget, or in a greenhouse? Go drip.
- Irrigating pasture, maize, or a large open area? Sprinklers, most likely a rain gun or zinc alloy sprinkler for coverage.
